Kielce is known internationally mostly through Targi Kielce — the exhibition centre that hosts dozens of trade fairs each year. But the city and its surroundings have far more to offer. If you have a free afternoon or a day off during your trip, here's what's worth seeing within a 30-minute drive.
One of the most beautiful karst caves in Poland, located near Chęciny. Crystal-clear stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years, guided tours lasting about 40 minutes. The constant temperature inside is 9°C — welcome relief in summer heat. Book tickets online at jaskiniaj.pl. Not open on Tuesdays.
A 14th-century royal fortress perched on a limestone hill, offering a panoramic view of the Kielce basin and the Holy Cross Mountains. The climb takes about 15 minutes. Combined with Jaskinia Raj (3 km away), it makes an excellent full-day excursion.
The Kadzielnia Nature Reserve is right in the city — a former limestone quarry turned into a geological park with walking paths and a small cave (free entry). The 17th-century Bishop's Palace (Muzeum Narodowe) is one of the best preserved baroque palaces in Poland. The pedestrian street Sienkiewicza has plenty of restaurants.
The Holy Cross National Park preserves one of the oldest landscapes in Europe. The main attraction is Łysa Góra (595 m) with its Benedictine monastery and the distinctive gołoborza — ancient quartzite boulder fields. The trail from Nowa Słupia takes about 45 minutes each way. Good boots recommended.
Two reservoirs close to the property: Zalew Strawczyn (6 km), a quiet beach lake ideal for a morning swim or evening walk. Sielpia (15 km), known locally as 'the Ibiza of Holy Cross' — sandy beaches, water sport rentals (kayaks, SUP), and a lively atmosphere in summer. Both are excellent for a break from the fair schedule.
